Who is a good coach?
Not the one, who always talks about his own greatness!
What are the characteristics of a good coach? Can we define these characteristics at all?
Well, based on previous experience we can hardly determine the true self of a good coach, perhaps a good coach is the one, who hardly fails and whose team brings in good results. At the end, can we find a single quality of a good coach that can be found in every successful coaching career and coach?
The UEFA has drafted (based on international experience) the general characteristics that are typical of a professional coach.

A good coach has good results, selects a national “A” group, wins international cups, and the national league. A good coach’s team is successful, and they always win the important games. |

His teams perform continuously at the same level without any fluctuation. A the professional coach does not plan for a long time; he concentrates on the next game to be won. He stands for stability, and his behaviour is not unreliable. The result of the team is not so ambiguous although sometimes his team can be defeated. |

His players do not miss many games due to injuries. This attribute indicates his preparedness and his good experience, because he is able to lead his team on the basis of a wide focus depending on the circumstances. |

He is able to renew himself. In the constant changes of professional soccer it can happen that the same method or behavior does not lead to the same result, or it leads to failure. A the successful coach has to be able to renew himself time by time. A the coach has to be able to adapt his behavior successfully to different situations. Without such adaptation a long and successful career can be hardly imagined until retirement. A the coach, who is able to continuously renew himself indicates real characteristic features of a good personality. |

He is not in the focus of journalists (he gives interviews if it is necessary). Professional coaches often have to give interviews, so the image created by the audience can influence the self-image of the coach and the image of soccer as well. A the successful coach knows that sometimes a journalist has to ask inconvenien questions not because of personal insult. Successful coaches are sought after journalists, they haves an easier job, because their work is coordinated by a media expert. |

To be a coach is a challenge for him, it is one way for self-expression. A coach is only a small part of the complex system of soccer. If his team loses the game, he is the person to blame.
