Technical and tactical exercises in goalkeeper training

All the changes that happened in soccer in the world have had an impact on goalkeeping, too. The faster game requires a shift in technical, tactical preparation. At the same time, goalkeepers need to be ready for a greater psychological burden.
The changes in the rules of soccer have had an effect on goalkeepers’ role in a game, especially on their ability of using the feet. A goalkeeper should be able to strike the ball first time or after controlling it using either the left or the right foot, in some cases able to dribble, and initiate attacks making long passes. A goalie must be prepared at all time for chipping in the game just like any of his outfield teammates.
This altered goalkeeping requires modernized training methods. The goalkeeper coach – as all the pictures show – presents himself at every exercise. He is not only directs the exercises, but he is also ready for correcting mistakes. Whenever it is necessary, he is prepared to help by participating in the drills.
The exercises are organized in two major categories: technical and game exercises.

These drills are put together by Gyula Tamas, UEFA „A” license coach, who is also the goalkeeper coach for the Hungarian National Team, and for professional teams of Vasas and Ujpest from Budapest.

Technical exercise

The goalie runs to the balls placed on the side and picks them up one at a time. He then throws a ball to his partner /coach/ who strikes it first time back to the far corner. The goalie moves back to the goal and tries to save the shot.

Technical exercise

The goalie runs out and facing his goal he jumps over the obstacles (feet together), then he touches one of the posts and after facing the field he tries to save each of the shots on both sides.

Technical exercise

One goalie goes at a time and they alternate. He moves between cones using specific goalkeepers’ movements and then he tries to save the ball stroke by a partner /coach/. The drill should be done in both directions and sides.

Technical exercise

Three goalkeepers train at the same time. The goalie in the center hits the ball (thrown by his coach) to the right and left using sideway movements so his two other goalie mates are forced to save, too. Continually changing roles.

Technical exercise

The goalie hits the balls (one at a time) placed on one side of the goal, and then he tries to save high balls stroke by his mate /or coach/ to the other side.

Technical exercise

Saving shots at chest level, above the head, in front of feet after a bounce, and low shots. It can be done as a competition.

Technical exercise

Two-two goalies train. After the saves the goalies in the goals change places by jumping over the obstacles.

Technical exercise

Practicing saves over an obstacle using the opposite hand.

Technical exercise

The goalie cannot use his hands to block the shot. After he controls the ball, he passes it back to that side where his coach moved.

Technical exercise

Three goalies train together. The goalie in the center goal passes the balls (using right or left foot) to his partners on his sides so they have to save them. Then as he is moving backwards, he has to save the balls stroke by the coach.

Game exercise

Two goalies train together.
The goalie who starts the game has multiple chances to score:

  • he can strike the ball directly from his hand on his opponent’s goal

  • he can either throw or strike the ball onto the rebound-wall and as the ball comes back to him, he volleys it on his opponent’s goal. This kind of goal counts two points.

The other goalie can save the shots that come from the rebound-wall with his head, chest, or feet, but then he has to strike them immediately back on the other goal.
The game can be timed or it can go until one of the teams reaches a given score.

Game exercise

One touch game.
Two-two goalies play against each other. Every pair is allowed to touch the ball twice (one touch for each of the two) until one goalie from the other team touches the ball (either because they need to defend or to attack). Then the counting of touches starts again.
The game can be timed or it can go until one of the teams reaches a given score
